Winter 2011 Newsletter

Here I sit, thinking of all the new things I want to share with you! I hope everyone had a safe and happy holiday season. Now we look forward and see all the new projects that we want to do.

WE WON!!!!!! I would like to send out a BIG thank you to all of you who have made pillow cases for our challenge. We (that is you) have made over 700 pillowcases!!!!!!!! You beat Quilty Pleasures in the east end. They delivered 443 pillow cases to Ronald McDonald House. So between to the two shops, over 1100 pillow cases have been given out to the two charities. That is fabulous!!!!! Way to go ladies. We are still collecting if you are still making pillowcases. I would like to keep this going and give more to the community that we live in. I was thinking……a women’s shelter or if you have any other suggestions that would be great.

I have so many Blocks of the Month for you to choose from I don’t know where to begin. I have planned a BOM for everyone, whether you like batiks to flannel, I have it all! You need to stop by the shop and see these quilts, and get yourself signed up for one or two. They are hard to pass up. Thimbleberries and On Point have limited space, so sign up soon so you are not disappointed. Blocks of the Month are great way to learn a new technique and meet new quilty friends. Check out my Block of the Month page for times and prices.

Saturday Sampler

Vicki McGowen designed three quilts using 12" pieced and appliqué blocks. The pieced blocks are traditional blocks, but will include some with more challenging options. The add-on appliqué will include traditional Folk Art designs with bunnies, birds, pineapples, flowers, and wreaths. They may be hand or machine appliquéd.

The setting arrangement shown uses all 24 blocks plus a bit of vine appliqué in the middle border.

Thimbleberries Quilt Club 2011

Border Blast

This year’s Thimbleberries club is called Border Blast and we are offering it in the Northern Lights color way. It is a queen size measuring, 96 x 112. The kit will also include Border and Binding fabric. You will be able to prepay and order Thimbleberries wide Backing.

House Hunting

House Hunting is a 12 month BOM that finishes at approx. 76 X 76. Each month you will make one House block and two Log Cabin blocks.

On Point

On Point is a diagonal set quilt, made from 14 framed pieced blocks surrounding a large pieced star center. Pieced setting triangles and squares that finish into an 80 x 101 bed size quilt.

Snowpennies

Snowpennies is a 12 month program. You can combine all the “pennies” into a quilt approx. 60 x 78 or you can make each one into a 17” Penny Rug.

We will be using flannel for the background and border and wool felt for the appliqué and the penny rug.

BIG NEWS!!!!!!!!!!

A lot of you have been asking and we have delivered!!! We have a Statler Stitcher Quilting Machine in the shop! We will only be doing edge to edge patterns. Top to bottom the whole quilt, you will be able to pick your pattern and thread colour and the kind of batting you would like in your quilt and we do the rest.

Remember that it is time to get your sewing machine tuned up for the up coming sewing season. Bring your machine in to the shop and we will send it to Jean for a tune up and oiling.

A quilting friend shared this quote with me, and I'd like to share it with all of you....

"In order to have a relationship with our creativity,

we must take the time to cultivate it"

-Julia Cameron Cultivate your creativity!

Almonte Quilt Guild

Calling all Mississippi Mills Quilters. There is a Quilt Guild for all you quilters. At monthly meetings, the 3th Monday of each month at the Civitan Hall in Almonte from 7 pm to 9 pm, you’ll be inspired by show and tell. You will learn new skills as well as work on service projects and meet new friends that have a common interest. Don’t be shy, come and join the fun.

Sewing Machine Service

Helpful hint: For every 8 hours of sewing, clean your machine around the feed dogs and bobbin case to keep your machine running smoothly. A pipe cleaner is very useful for this cleaning as it will get into the small spaces and pickup all the bits of lint. It is especially important when you are sewing with flannel.
